10 Interesting HVAC Facts You Surely Didn’t Know

To say the truth, unless you are working in the industry, the topic of HVAC might not appear very fun for you. But it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some interesting HVAC facts. We gathered some of the most entertaining and surprising stories about HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) for you. Time to dive into it!

10 Interesting HVAC Facts

  1. The Romans were the first people ever to use any kind of air heating system. They also heated floors in their houses during cold winters.
  2. The first modern air conditioner was invented in 1902 by Willis Haviland Carrier. He was an engineer who began experimenting with the laws of humidity control to solve an application problem at a printing plant in Brooklyn, NY.
  3. Until 1931 air conditioners were too big and expensive for regular homes. The first air conditioners were over six feet tall, just as wide and measured about 20 feet in length. Two inventors named H.H. Schultz and J.Q. Sherman made the AC small enough for everyday household. However, those early models were still bigger and much heavier than those of today.
  4. Many medications would never have been invented without the air conditioning. That means that some diseases would’ve never been cured.
  5. Movie theatres were some of the first places to have air conditioning as a marketing strategy to get more people to go to the movies. It worked handsomely, and this is why we have the term “summer blockbuster”.interesting hvac facts
  6. You should thank the heat for the summer breaks in schools. Before the invention of the AC people believed that summers were too hot for children to study — so they did not have to go to school during the hottest months. Luckily for kids, the idea stuck and they get to enjoy the summer months with the benefit of the cooling system.
  7. Scientists found out that with the invention of the AC people have lost a good part of their natural tolerance for the heat. Back in the days we were way more stoic to it.
  8. Poorly installed HVAC systems in New York City cost building owners anywhere between $130 to $180 million each and every year. That is why you need to turn to real professionals while installing your system — like FUSE!
  9. Each year, people in the US consume more energy to power their AC units than the whole continent of Africa uses entirely per the same year. Now that’s dedication to cooling.
  10. And the last one of the interesting HVAC facts for today. One of the patents for one of the first modern air conditioners was called “an apparatus for treating the air”. Imagine, how we would abbreviate that. AAFTTA? Yes, “the AC” sounds much more convenient.
